Japan to Send Observers to the Ninth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU Summit)

- Mr. Keitaro Sato, Ambassador in Charge of Conflict, Refugee-related Issues in Africa, and Special Envoy for UN Reform, and Mr. Kinichi Komano, Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia (Permanent Representative to AU), will attend the Ninth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU Summit) to be held from July 1 (Sun) to 3 (Tue) in Accra, capital of the Republic of Ghana, as observers from the Government of Japan.
- The Summit will be attended by the leaders of 53 African countries/regions (AU member states), and they will mainly discuss a vision of the ‘United States of Africa’, which is the main theme of this summit.
- The Japanese observers will meet African leaders attending the Summit and talk about Japan’s assistance to Africa including the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) to encourage the African leaders to participate in it. The participants will also exchange views on bilateral relations, the regional situation, and Japan-African cooperation in the international arena including the UN Security Council reforms.
