Visit to Japan by Japanese American Leadership Delegation

February 28, 2007

  1. As a joint project with the Center for Global Partnership of the Japan Foundation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will invite to Japan a group of 13 Japanese Americans who are playing leading roles in such fields as business, public organizations, education and the arts, from March 3 (Sat) to 11 (Sun). Ms. Irene Hirano, President and CEO of the Japanese American National Museum, will lead these people who are from Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, Los Angles, New York, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
  2. During its stay in Japan, the group will exchange views in Tokyo with people concerned in such fields as the National Diet, government, economy and international exchanges, and Japanese Americans residing in Japan. On March 6 (Tue), the group will have a panel discussion with Forum 21 (young business leaders) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They will then visit Kyoto and Hiroshima and on March 9 (Fri) will attend a symposium to be held at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and make a presentation under the theme, "Japanese Americans at the Crossroads: Connecting Past, Present and Future."
  3. This invitation is intended to promote understanding among the Japanese people about the historical experiences and present situation of Japanese Americans in the U.S., to enable the young Japanese American leaders to have direct contact with Japanese politics, economy, society, and culture, to promote their understanding of Japan through talks with knowledgeable Japanese people, and to give them opportunities to form networks with Japan. This is the seventh invitation of its kind.
  4. It is hoped that this program will strengthen the ties between the Japanese American community and Japan in the future, thus leading to further enhanced Japan-U.S. relations.
