Meeting of the Ambassador, Consuls-General of Japan and Japanese American Leaders

November 4, 2005

  1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold a meeting of the Ambassador and Consuls-General of Japan in the U.S. and Japanese American leaders on November 6 (Sun) and 7 (Mon) in San Francisco.
  2. The meeting will be attended on the U.S. side by Mr. Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. Senator, and about 20 Japanese American community leaders from 10 regions of the U.S.; and on the Japanese side by Mr. Ryozo Kato, Japanese Ambassador to the U.S., and Consuls-General and other officials of nine consulates in the U.S., and from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Tomohiko Taniguchi, Deputy Director-General, Public Diplomacy Department, and officials concerned of the Department and the North American Affairs Bureau. Relevant officials of the Japan Foundation's Center for Global Partnership will also attend the meeting.
  3. The meeting will exchange views on the task of strengthening the bonds between Japanese American communities and Japan and discuss the direction and a concrete action plan for establishing a network connecting Japanese Americans and Japanese.
  4. As the sentiments and interests among Japanese Americans toward Japan have been tending to weaken, at the meeting, third- and fourth-generation Japanese Americans, core members of American society, will have a frank exchange of views with the heads of Japanese diplomatic establishments in the U.S. to strengthen present and future relations between Japanese Americans and Japanese, and Japan-U.S. relations in general. The meeting, the third of its kind, is highly significant for both Japanese Americans and Japan.
