Holding of APEC Symposium on the Asian Economy

- The APEC Symposium on the Asian Economy will be held on July 22 (Thu.) and 23 (Fri.) under the co-sponsorship of the Governments of Japan and Thailand.
- About 20 experts from business, governmental and academic circles of APEC economies will participate in this symposium. From Japan, Mr. Toyoo Gyohten, President of the Institute for International Monetary Affairs, and two other experts will attend this symposium. Prime Minister Jennifer Shipley of New Zealand, Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura of Japan, Finance Minister Nimmanhemin Tarrin of Thailand, and President Hiroshi Okuda of Toyota Motor Corp. are expected to give keynote addresses, followed by panel discussions by some of the experts.
- This symposium is an APEC project which was jointly proposed by the Governments of Japan and Thailand and gained unanimous support at the Second APEC Senior Officer Meeting held in Christchurch, New Zealand, in May this year. There will be comprehensive discussions at the symposium on such matters as the current situation of the Asian economy, regional cooperation, structural reform, and future visions of the Asia-Pacific region.
- The results of discussions in this symposium will be submitted to the Ministerial and Leaders' meetings to be held in Auckland this September.
