Establishment of Diplomatic Relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina

(Announcement by the Press Secretary)

9 February, 1996

  1. On February 9 (Fri), Foreign Ministers' Letters for establishing diplomatic relations between Japan and Bosnia and Herzegovina were exchanged in Vienna between the Ambassadors of the two countries to the Republic of Austria.

    As a result, diplomatic relations between the two countries were established as of that day.

  2. Japan hopes that all the ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be able to live and prosper together based on the Peace Agreement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and expects that diplomatic relations between the countries will develop into a relationship that can contribute to the realization of such a country.

Japan recognized Bosnia and Herzegovina as an independent state on January 23, 1996.
