Emergency Assistance to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Response to the Floods Disaster

- On Friday, January 4, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 23 million yen (tents etc) to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request following serious damage from the floods.
- Sri Lanka has been hit by heavy rain since the end of December, last year, which caused floods and landslides in various parts of Sri Lanka, mainly in the Northern, Eastern and Central Provinces. At present, over 440,000 people are affected by the disaster, and about 30,000 people are evacuated.
- In response to the request from the Government of Sri Lanka, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims as well as in light of friendly relations between Japan and Sri Lanka.
