On Wednesday, September 5, Mr. Ryuji Yamane, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, had a luncheon meeting with Mr. Michael Link, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. An overview of the meeting is as follows.
- Opening
Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Yamane welcomed Minister Link to his first visit to Japan. He also remarked that efforts should be made to deepen Japan-Germany bilateral relations through sister city relationships and other initiatives. - Japan-European Union (EU) Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA)
Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Yamane expressed his expectations for the early start of negotiations on the EPA, noting that it would contribute to the economies of both Japan and the EU. In response, Minister Link stated that he appreciated the efforts Japan had made. He also noted that he shared the view of Japan on the importance of the Japan-EU EPA, and that he wanted to continue cooperation with Japan. - The European sovereign debt crisis
Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Yamane expressed his expectations that Germany would continue to exercise leadership toward the resolution of this issue. In response, Minister Link said that Germany would continue to concentrate on protecting the euro. He also stated that Europe intended to continue collaborations on the European sovereign debt crisis and seek a true resolution to the problem. - Invitation to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games
Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Yamane introduced that Tokyo was a candidate city for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games. Minister Link said that he would inform this to the relevant people.
