On Tuesday, September 4, Mr. Joe Nakano, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with Mr. Michael Link, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. An overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Opening
    Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakano welcomed Minister Link to his first visit to Japan, noting that he had hosted bilateral consultations at the Munich Conference on Security Policy in February of this year.

  2. The European sovereign debt crisis
    Minister Link commented that the European sovereign debt crisis was an issue within the process of deepening the integration of the European Union (EU) and Euro monetary system. He stated that Europe would continue to work closely toward resolving problems and raising competitiveness, and said that he had expectations for the trust and investment of Japan.
    Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakano noted that the issue posed direct and indirect impacts for both Japan and the world economy, and stated that Germany’s role in dealing with the issues was large. He further said that he hoped to continue to deepen Japan’s cooperation and understanding on the matter.

  3. Japan-EU EPA
    Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakano stated that a Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) would contribute to the strengthening of collaboration between Japan and the EU as well as the economic growth of both sides.
    Minister Link said that Germany wished to continue to work on the matter in a constructive manner, adding that the conclusion of such an agreement would have high potential for the economic growth of both Japan and the EU.

  4. In addition to the above, Minister Link stated that Japan was a partner of Germany with which the country shared common values, and remarked that he hoped to continue promoting cooperation in the international arena.
