On Tuesday, August 28, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, had a dinner with H.E. Djoko Suyanto, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, who was visiting Japan upon invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the Iikura Guest House for approximately one hour and a half from 7:00 pm. An overview of the dinner meeting is as follows:
- At the beginning, Minister Gemba welcomed the visit to Japan by Coordinating Minister Djoko Suyanto, and stated that the Government of Japan values relations with Indonesia, with whom Japan shares basic values and common strategic interests, and that the roles of the “strategic partnership” between the two countries for the stability and prosperity of the region are increasing. In response, Coordinating Minister Djoko Suyanto stated that Japan is one of the closest non-ASEAN countries for Indonesia, and the Government of Indonesia would like to further deepen friendly relations with Japan.
- Minister Gemba and Coordinating Minister Djoko Suyanto shared views that because Japan and Indonesia share common vision not only for bilateral relations but for regional and global issues, it would be important for the two countries to cooperate with each other in order to play constructive roles for the peace and stability of the region.
- Moreover, they shared views on deepening cooperation in fields such as disaster response, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, countermeasures against terrorism, etc., in addition to supporting democratization in the region through the Bali Democracy Forum and supporting the Palestinian Authority through coordination between Japan and Indonesia.
- Furthermore, Minister Gemba stated that the Government of Japan would begin to issue multiple short-term visas for Indonesians holding general passports from Saturday, September 1, and expressed his expectation that human exchanges between the two countries will further expand.
- Minister Gemba and Coordinating Minister Djoko Suyanto also exchanged opinions concerning regional situations. Minister Gemba stated that Indonesia is important for both Asia and the world, and appreciated efforts by Indonesia led by Dr. R. M. Marty Natalegawa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to maintain the unity of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In response, Coordinating Minister Djoko Suyanto stated that the Government of Indonesia considers that this region should not be one where a conflict occurs or exists but a region that brings interests to countries concerned. Then, both ministers also shared views on closely cooperating with each other in the future.
