Japanese

  1. On July 6, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security, which was established through the initiative of the Government of Japan, decided to extend assistance totaling 3,697,282 US dollars (approximately 299 million yen) to a project entitled "Reduction of Human Insecurity in Alto Wangki Bocay Nicaragua: an Integrated, Multisectoral and Intercultural Human Security Intervention".

  2. In Alto Wangki Bocay in Nicaragua, there have been political and inter-cultural problems with deep structural roots. Currently, there are tensions between mestizo farmers and the indigenous populations over land property and environmental protection. As a result, women, youth, adolescents and children are exposed to sexual and domestic violence and indigenous communities are faced with discrimination and inequalities in treatment.

  3. The project is implemented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aiming at promoting the human security of the people in Alto Wangki Bocay through offering basic services such as health and empowerment. The activities will include the following:
    (1) Provide income generating opportunities and capacities to contribute to their economic independence and sustainability.
    (2) Reduce civil insecurity and improve access to attention of victims of violence, by means of a comprehensive system of care and protection at local, institutional and political levels.
    (3) Strengthen quality basic health care services, especially sexual and reproductive health.
    (4) Strengthen intercultural communication and improve interethnic relations.
    (5) Reduce environmental problems through environmental education.
    (6) Improve the protection and promotion of human rights through strengthening of local administrative capacity, empowerment and advocacy.
    (7) Improve quality of formal education collaborating with families and communities.
    (8) Increase knowledge on the concept and application of human security.

  4. This project is expected to promote the human security of the vulnerable population in Alto Wangki Bocay in Nicaragua.
