Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution on the Situation in Mali

Japan welcomes the unanimous adoption on Thursday, July 5 of UN Security Council Resolution 2056, which confirms the international community's concerns regarding the situation in Mali and seeks to resolve the matter. Japan appeals to all those concerned to endeavor to restore constitutional order, and for the integrity of Mali's territory to be preserved in line with the UN Security Council Resolution.
Japan shares the concerns of the international community that the human rights and humanitarian situations in northern Mali are deteriorating. Japan appeals strongly for all rebel groups in the northern region to promptly end hostile activities and to strive to restore the human rights and humanitarian situations. In addition, Japan is deeply concerned about the destruction of cultural heritages in northern Mali by rebel groups.
Japan supports and encourages the efforts being undertaken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), Mali's neighboring countries and the UN to resolve the situation in Mali.
