On Monday, July 9, from 6:50 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Senator the Hon Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia. An overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the beginning, Minister Gemba expressed his appreciation for Minister Carr's attendance at and Australia's cooperation in the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan. Minister Gemba also stated that Japan has an intention to continuously play a leading role in the Asia-Pacific region jointly with Australia. Minister Carr praised the leadership of the Government of Japan in hosting the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan.

  2. The ministers shared the recognition that it is important for the international community to support the reform efforts of Myanmar.

  3. The ministers concurred that, in order to further bolster the rapid progress made in the bilateral security cooperation between Japan and Australia, the two countries would continue to seize opportunities to deepen discussions, including swiftly holding the Japan-Australia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Consultations ("2+2").

  4. The ministers agreed to advance collaboration in regard to regional cooperation frameworks, including the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
