On July 9, Mr. Joe Nakano, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with Mr. Chris Alexander, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Defence, Canada. Mr. Alexander is visiting Japan to participate in the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan. They confirmed plans for the implementation of counternarcotics assistance in Afghanistan by the Government of Japan and the Government of Canada.
- The Government of Japan has extended some 3.46 million U.S. dollars and the Government of Canada extended some 3.5 million Canadian dollars to UNODC for the counternarcotics assistance in Afghanistan. The Government of Japan and the Government of Canada have decided to cooperate in implementing the assistance through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
- The aim of this assistance is to improve public safety in Afghanistan, and the assistance includes support for the forensic laboratory within the Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA), enhanced border enforcement including the establishment of Border Liaison Offices, support for the establishment of mobile detection teams, and support for the Mobile Training Unit within CNPA.

Japan and Canada are working together to support counternarcotics measures in Afghanistan on the basis of the discussions during the first Japan-Canada Political, Peace and Security Subcabinet “2 Plus 2” Dialogue last summer.
