Japan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On Sunday, July 8, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Hina Rabbani Khar, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, who was visiting Japan to attend the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Gemba stated that Minister Khar's attendance at the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan was very significant, given the importance of the relationship of trust between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and expressed his gratitude for the productive statement made by Minister Khar at the Conference. Minister Gemba further expressed his hope that a relationship of genuine trust would be built between Afghanistan and Pakistan for the future of Afghanistan. In response, Minister Khar highly praised Japan's initiative to hold the Tokyo Conference, as well as Japan's leadership in promoting the economic self-reliance of Afghanistan, stating that economic as well as military and political efforts would be needed for regional stability.
- Furthermore, regarding U.S.-Pakistan relations, Minister Gemba stated that the recent reopening of NATO ground supply routes was a welcome step, and that U.S.-Pakistan or U.S.-Pakistan-Afghanistan cooperation is important for the eradication of terrorism and extremism. In response, Minister Khar stated that the reopening of NATO ground supply routes was an opportunity to move forward U.S.-Pakistan relations. With reference to the U.S.-Pakistan-Afghanistan Foreign Ministers' meeting which had been held on that day, Minister Khar expressed her hope that Japan would cooperate towards the regional stability as an important player in the international community.
- Minister Gemba explained Japan's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations in such areas as people-to-people exchanges and economic cooperation following the Japan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers' Meeting in May this year. In response, Minister Khar expressed her gratitude and hoped that Japan would provide support in the power sector.
