On Sunday, July 8, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP, Secretary of State for International Development of the United Kingdom (UK), held a meeting from 4:16 p.m. to 4:37 p.m. An overview of the meeting is as follows.
- Minister Gemba began by expressing his appreciation to the UK for its assistance commitment to Afghanistan, including commitment beyond 2015, and welcomed the UK’s hosting of the first Ministerial-level Review Meeting in 2014. In response, Minister Mitchell expressed his appreciation to Minister Gemba for his contribution to the completion of a substantive outcome document.
- Minister Mitchell noted the importance of maintaining momentum in continuing to promote Japan-UK civil nuclear cooperation as well as security and defense cooperation - the outcomes of the recent Japan-UK Summit Meeting, to which Minister Gemba expressed agreement.
- Both ministers concurred to support the reforms in Myanmar and to cooperate on discussions on the post-2015 development agenda.
