Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Selection on Candidate Cities to Host the 32nd Olympic Games and the 16th Paralympic Games in 2020

  1. Japan welcomes the selection of Tokyo as one of the candidate cities to host the 32nd Olympic Games and the 16th Paralympic Games in 2020, at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board held on Thursday, May 24 (Wednesday, May 23, local time) in Quebec City, Canada.

  2. Japan believes that hosting these events will provide great dreams and hopes to Japanese people engaging in rebuilding after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and that it will also provide an opportunity to show Japan’s gratitude to the people around the world who extended their support.

  3. As a member of the Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan also intends to fully support Tokyo’s bid activities, to ensure that the holding of these events in Japan becomes a reality.
