Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Terrorist Bombing in Damascus

May 11, 2012
Japanese

  1. Japan is deeply shocked and outraged by two terrorist bombing incidents in Damascus, the capital city of Syria, that killed at least 55 people and injured 372 people (announced by the Syrian Ministry of Interior) on Thursday, May 10. Japan firmly condemns such a cruel and atrocious act of terrorism that target innocent people indiscriminately. Japan mourns the victims and expresses its condolences to the bereaved families.

  2. No act of terrorism can be justified for whatever reason or purpose. Japan fears that such acts of terrorism might undermine the efforts currently made by the international community, centering on the Peace Plan of Mr. Kofi Annan, Joint Special Envoy of the UN and the Arab League, to peacefully break the cycle of violence in Syria.

  3. Japan will continue its diplomatic efforts in collaboration with the international community to immediately stop all kinds of violence in Syria.
