April 27, 2012
Japanese
- On Thursday, April 26, a Director General-level meeting of the Non proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) member countries took place in Istanbul, Turkey. At the meeting, Japan was represented by Ambassador Makio Miyagawa, Director General of the Disarmament, Non-proliferation and Science Department.
- At the meeting, participants discussed the strategic approach of the NPDI in the lead-up to the First Preparatory Committee for the 2015 NPT Review Conference, scheduled to take place beginning April 30. Discussions centered on the four joint working papers that the NPDI would submit to the Preparatory Committee (on transparency in disarmament, a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT), the IAEA Additional Protocol (AP), and disarmament and non-proliferation education). North Korea's recent missile launch was also discussed, with participants agreeing that the launch was a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and affirming their intention to call on North Korea to respect its international commitments.
- At the meeting it was also decided to hold the 2013 NPDI Foreign Ministers Meeting in the Netherlands, and the 2014 NPDI Foreign Ministers Meeting in Hiroshima.
