Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Situation in Syria
April 11, 2012
Japanese
- In Syria, the violence continues and is giving rise to a large number of victims even after the April 10 deadline for the commencement of the withdrawal of troops under the six-point proposal outlined by Dr. Kofi Annan, Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for Syria. Additionally, citizens in the vicinity of Syria's borders with Turkey and Lebanon have also been harmed. It is extremely deplorable that despite the efforts of a large number of countries in the international community, the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate.
- Japan reiterates its call for the Syrian government to unconditionally implement Special Envoy Annan's proposal as quickly as possible, and to respond sincerely to the appeals of the United Nations and the League of Arab States.
- Japan intends to continue to cooperate with the international community and focus attention on supporting the oppressed citizens of Syria.
