April 4, 2012
Japanese

  1. On Sunday, April 1, 2012, a legislature by-election was held in Myanmar for a total of 45 districts of both upper and lower houses and local governments. According to an official announcement from the Government of Myanmar, the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi won seats in 43 districts out of the 45.

  2. Japan has urged the Government of Myanmar to enable all the parties concerned, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, to participate in the political process. This time, all the parties concerned could participate in politics in such a manner. This represents significant step in the democratization of Myanmar and Japan welcomes it. Japan would like to support efforts by the Government of Myanmar toward further democratization, national reconciliation, and economic reforms.
