- On Wednesday, March 7, Mr. Joe Nakano, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from Lieutenant General HI(M) Muhammad Asif, Director General of Joint Staff of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, for about 25 minutes from 11:20. The outline of the meeting is as follows.
- Lieutenant General Asif expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for inviting him to his first visit to Japan. He firmly believed that Japan, having overcome the nuclear calamity of Hiroshima, would be able to recover from the disaster caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. He stated that as Japan and Pakistan have strengthened bilateral relations through exchanges at various levels, the people of Pakistan have very close feelings towards Japan, noting that they were greatly impressed by the Self Defence Forces’ relief activities in the wake of natural disasters which hit Pakistan in recent years.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakano appreciated the role Pakistan had played in counter terrorism measures. He asked for continued cooperation for the stability of the region including Afghanistan, as Japan plans to hold Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan in July. In response, Lieutenant General Asif stated that stability in Afghanistan is important for Pakistan, and that Pakistan was willing to cooperate to resolve the Afghan issues even with great sacrifices both in its military and civilians. Lieutenant General Asif explained about relief and rehabilitation activities in the areas affected by anti-terrorism operation in Pakistan, and expressed his hope for further assistance to these activities by the international community including Japan.
