Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Referendum on the New Constitution in Egypt

  1.  On December 26 (December 25 local time), the draft of the new Egyptian constitution was approved as a result of a public referendum. Japan expects that the political process of Egypt will move forward smoothly, including the election of the People’s Assembly, so that Egypt will fulfill a constructive role towards the achievement of the stability in the region.
  2.  No force will be permitted to resolve a conflict of political opinion through the use of violence. Japan continues to expect that sincere dialogues will take place among all political forces, and that reforms will move forward smoothly and peacefully by reflecting the wide range of public opinions. Japan will continue to support these reform efforts of Egypt.
