Emergency Assistance to the Independent State of Samoa for Cyclone Disaster

  1.  On Thursday, December 20, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency relief goods worth 10 million yen (tents, portable jerry cans, etc) to the Independent State of Samoa, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of Samoa following serious damage by the cyclone.
  2.  In the Independent State of Samoa, extensive damages were caused by Cyclone Evan which hit on December 13, and on December 17, Tui Atua Tamasese Efi, the Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa declared the State of Emergency for 30 days. The Government of Samoa reported, as of December 18, 4 people were killed, 8 people were still missing, over 5,000 people were affected and the total damage  by the cyclone was estimated 300 million tala ( approximately 11 billion yen)
  3.  In response to the request from the Government of the Independent State of Samoa, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims as well as in light of friendly relations between the two countries.
