Ceremony Launching the "Green Future Action Corps"

On December 17, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, welcomed the 13 representatives of the "Green Future Action Corps" and carried out a ceremony launching the "Green Future Action Corps." The overview of the ceremony is as follows.
- At the start of the ceremony, Minister Gemba welcomed the launch of the “Green Future Action Corps,” which he himself announced at Rio+20 last June. Minister Gemba said that he hoped the “Green Future Action Corps” would be a symbol of Japan’s grassroots activities and contribute to the development of human resources in developing countries, a promoting Japan’s efforts to be a leading country in sustainable development.
- A representative of the Corps expressed their determination that they would contribute to developing countries in the field of sustainable development activities and to the strengthening of Japanese diplomacy by sharing information and building networks between relevant parties.
- Minister Gemba handed a certificate of membership, member’s badge and handbook to each member that made the courtesy call.

In the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) held last June, Minister Gemba, as the representative of the Government of Japan, gave a speech in which he announced that the Government of Japan would undertake "Green Future" Initiatives consisting of three pillars which are: the spreading of “Future City Initiatives” worldwide, the contribution to the global transition to a green economy, and the building of a resilient society. As a part of Japan’s support for the transition to a green economy, Japan announced the organization of the “Green Future Action Corps,” which will involve about 10,000 experts over three years in order to support the development of human resources in developing countries. The first group of “Green Future Action Corps” is composed of 73 members of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), etc., who are specialized in sectors such as water, agriculture, and energy and will be dispatched between the end of December and the coming January. Those who attended the ceremony are 13 people of this group.
