Assistance by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security to the Project in Mexico

1. On September 27, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security decided to extend assistance totaling 3,209,232.4 US dollars (approximately 260 million yen) to a project entitled “Supporting the strengthening of government institutions and civil society capacities to improve the protection of vulnerable migrants in transit” in Mexico. This Fund was established through the initiative of the Government of Japan to promote human security in 1999.

2. The project is implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UNWOMEN) in Chiapas and Oxaca, located in the southern border of Mexico. In the regions, migrants in transit are exposed to the risks of kidnapping and physical violence and are confronted with discrimination and exclusion from host communities. This project aims at promoting the human security of those vulnerable migrants in the regions. The activities will include the following:

Supporting the strengthening of capacities of federal and state government institutions to provide assistance to vulnerable migrants in transit

Strengthening the capacities of civil society organizations that provide technical counseling to migrants and migrant shelters

Promoting a peaceful co-existence through awareness raising on the situation of migrants in transit in host communities and strengthening local networks between host communities and shelters

3. This project is expected to promote the human security of the vulnerable migrants in transit in Chiapas and Oxaca in Mexico.
