  1. On Thursday, January 26, Japan and Ukraine commemorated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties (1992).

  2. In commemoration of the anniversary,both countries celebrated the day on January 26, and Mr. Kazuyuki HAMADA, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Mr. Mykola KULINICH, Ambassador of Ukraine to Japan, exchanged letters written by Mr. Yoshihiko NODA, Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Viktor YANUKOVYCH, President of Ukraine, and letters written by Mr. Koichiro GEMBA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Kostyantyn GRYSHCHENKO, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, in which both countries celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties and confirmed efforts towards further developments.

  3. Mr. Hamada and Mr. Kulinich remarked that bilateral cooperation has developed in various fields these past 20 years, which is also shown in the Joint Statement on Japan-Ukraine Global Partnership issued by both countries' leaders in January 2011. In addition, both countries confirmed their direction in regards to conclusion of the agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of Ukraine concerning cooperation to advance response activities for the accidents at the nuclear power stations. Negotiations began on January 26 between the two nations, who have both had experience with nuclear accidents.

  4. On the same day,Mr. Toichi SAKATA, Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, and Mr. Ruslan DEMCHENKO, the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, also exchanged the letters written by the leaders and ministers of foreign affairs in Kiev, Ukraine.
