Extension of the Dispatch of the International Peace Cooperation Corps in Haiti for the Peace Keeping Operation (PKO)

January 20, 2012
Japanese

  1. On January 20, the Government of Japan made a cabinet decision to extend the term of the dispatch of Self-Defense Forces (SDF) units to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) for another one year until January 31, 2013. This Cabinet decision was made following the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2028 of October 14, 2011, to extend the mandate of MINUSTAH for one year, until October 15, 2012.

  2. MINUSTAH has been operating in Haiti since 2004, focused on ensuring a secure and stable environment as its main mandate.

  3. In response to requests from the UN and under the International Peace Cooperation Law, Japan dispatched SDF units in February 2010 following the earthquake in January 2010, and approximately 320 personnel are currently engaged in removal of rubble, ground leveling, road repairs, construction of small facilities, and other activities. It is necessary for the international community to support the recovery, reconstruction, and stabilization of Haiti, following the devastating earthquake which caused serious damage to the country and its already fragile infrastructure.

  4. Japan, together with the international community, will continue to provide as much support as possible to Haiti’s efforts toward recovery, reconstruction, and stabilization.
