Visit to Cuba by Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Ryuji Yamane (Overview)

Mr. Ryuji Yamane, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during his visit to the Republic of Cuba, from Wednesday, January 11 to Friday, January 13, completed the following major events.
- Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Yamane met with Mr. Marcelino Medina, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, on January 11. He also held talks with Mr. Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Vice President of the Council of Ministers; Mr. Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Mr. Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Minister of Trade and Investment, on January 12.
- In these meetings, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Yamane expressed his gratitude for the condolence and the proposal of assistance offered by the Cuban Government in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. He also called on Cuba to cooperate on resolving the debt issue between the two countries as well as the issue of abduction of Japanese citizens by North Korea.
First Vice Minister Medina and the rest of the Cuban side praised the disciplined actions of the Japanese people upon the Great East Japan Earthquake, and made reference to the Japanese economic assistance, appreciating its contribution to the development of Cuba.
Furthermore, both sides shared the understanding that mutual visits of important figures between the two countries have been increasing and that the Japan-Cuba Policy Dialogue is becoming a very important venue for the exchange of views. They exchanged ideas about the promotion of cooperation in the international arena including in the area of disaster prevention as well as the measures to further strengthen the bilateral relations. They also talked about other matters including the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) established in December 2011. - Beside the above meetings, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Yamane visited a medical facility on January 12, where he received explanations on initiatives taken in Cuba toward integrative medicine.
