Emergency Grant Aid for the 2011 Presidential Election in the Kyrgyz Republic

  1. On Tuesday, August 23, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency grant aid totaling 350 thousand US dollars (about 31 million yen) to the Kyrgyz Republic through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as an emergency aid, for the purpose of supporting a fair and smooth implementation of the presidential election to be held on Sunday, October 30 in the Kyrgyz Republic.

  2. This presidential election is the first to be held since the political upheaval in April 2010. Success of the upcoming election is of critical importance for the democratization and stability of the country. The Government of the Kyrgyz Republic is exerting utmost efforts to ensure a fair and smooth implementation of the election in cooperation with the international community. Japan has been supporting the Kyrgyz Republic's nation-building efforts since its independence and the assistance for the upcoming presidential election is a part of it.

  3. Japan expects that a fair and smooth implementation of the presidential election will bring the stability and democratic consolidation to the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as result in the contribution to the peace and stability in Central Asia, a neighboring region of Afghanistan.
