Assistance by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security to a Project in Indonesia

  1. On 12 August, the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance totalling 2,357,798.30 US dollars (approximately 210 million yen) through the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security to a project entitled "Protecting and empowering victims of trafficking in Indonesia (EMPOWER)", which is going to be implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

  2. Indonesia is not only one of the source countries, but also a destination / transit point of human trafficking. The background of this challenge is the social problems such as poverty and economic disparity. This project aims to enhance the capacity of the Government of Indonesia and civil societies to protect and empower victims, and to prevent trafficking in persons. The activities will include the following:

    —  Strengthening the capacity of key state and non-state actors in Indonesia and main countries of destination and transit to protect and empower victims of trafficking.

    —  Protecting and empowering victims of trafficking through the provision of direct assistance, including establishment of a Victim Assistance Fund to assist their recovery, return and reintegration.

    —  Strengthening capacity of key government agencies to address public as well as individuals health risks associated with human trafficking through training of health workers on medical and psychological assistance to victims of trafficking.

    —  Preventing trafficking in persons in targeted high risk villages through awareness raising and capacity building for community leaders, school staffs and vulnerable households.

  3. This project is expected to promote the human security of victims of trafficking.
