- On Friday, May 20, Ms. Makiko Kikuta, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from Chinese experts on atomic energy who were visiting Japan for a meeting to exchange opinions and information with the Japanese side.
- Ms. Kikuta stated that in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan was of the mind to continue cooperation with China in a variety of fields. She noted that the safety of atomic energy was an important pillar among those fields, and that she expected the furthering of exchanges and cooperation between Japanese and Chinese atomic energy experts. She also requested that steps be taken based on scientific data regarding import restrictions placed on Japanese agricultural, fisheries and other products.
- In response, the Chinese side stated that the Chinese Government was extremely interested in the disaster that had occurred in Japan, including the nuclear power plant incident, and that it regarded the meeting of experts as being important, especially considering that it was being held at a good timing just prior to the Japan-China-ROK Trilateral Summit Meeting. The Chinese side noted that it shared the general recognition that radiation released due to the incident at the nuclear power plant did not cause any harm to the environment in China or the health of its people, and stated that it would work to help the general public in China understand this.
