Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Situation in Myanmar (Release of Political Prisoners)

The Government of Myanmar announced on Monday, May 16 and started the release of prisoners including about fifty political prisoners on May 17. The Government of Japan evaluates it as a positive step toward national reconciliation by the Government of Myanmar.
The Government of Japan expects that the Government of Myanmar will further promote its movement of releasing political prisoners in the future and promote the democratization process.
