Signature of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity

  1. On April 11 (local time), a signing ceremony for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States. H.E. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Mr. Tsuneo Nishida, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, attended the ceremony and signed the Protocol on behalf of Japan.

  2. The Protocol was adopted at the Tenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which was chaired by Japan in October last year. The objective of the Protocol is the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources, thereby contributing to the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components.

1. The Convention on Biological Diversity: Adopted in Nairobi, Kenya, in May 1992, and entered into force in December 1993. Japan joined the Convention in May 1993. As of May 1, 2011, 193 Parties (including the European Union) belong to this Convention.

2. The Tenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity: Held in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture between 18-29 October last year. In addition to the adoption of the Nagoya Protocol, decisions including the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 (Aichi Biodiversity Targets) were adopted.

3. The Nagoya Protocol is open for signature by Parties to the Convention at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 2 February 2011 to 1 February 2012.
