Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the ASEAN Informal Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the Situation between Cambodia and Thailand

On Tuesday, February 22, the Informal Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN was held in Indonesia regarding the situation between Cambodia and Thailand. The Chair issued a statement in which Cambodia and Thailand expressed their commitment to avoid further clashes between the two countries and welcomed observers from Indonesia to observe the above mentioned commitment. Japan highly regards efforts by ASEAN and Indonesia, chair of ASEAN, to resolve the conflict along the border of the two countries. Japan hopes that efforts by the international community, including ASEAN, will contribute to fostering trust between the two countries.

Japan considers the improvement of relations between the two countries to be important for development in the Mekong region, and for the building of the ASEAN community through enhanced ASEAN connectivity. Japan will continue to call on both countries to peacefully resolve the issues between the two countries, in accordance with international rules.
