Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Re-election of Judge Hisashi Owada as Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ)

- On Friday, November 11 (November 10 in the U.S.), the elections of judges of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) were held in the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations, and Mr. Hisashi Owada, President and Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), who was nominated from Japan, was re-elected as a judge. Japan welcomes Judge Owada’s re-election.
- The continuous contribution by a Japanese judge to the ICJ is crucial since the role of the ICJ is increasing in importance for achieving peaceful settlement of international disputes, as the most authoritative judicial institution in the international community. The re-election of Judge Owada, who has served in this important position for nine years, indicates his high reputation and is significant also in terms of being the result of proactive campaigning by Japan, reflecting the importance it attaches to contribution to the ICJ.
- Japan looks forward to Judge Owada’s further success and at the same time intends to make more active contributions to the promotion of the rule of law within the international community through the further development of the ICJ.
