- The United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance totalling 4,145,240 US dollars (approximately 369 million yen) through the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security to a project entitled “Joint United Nations project for Peace Consolidation, Conflicts Prevention and Human Security in the Republic of Congo”, which is going to be implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security was established in the United Nations in 1999 through the initiative of the Government of Japan for the realization of human security.
- Although the security situation in the Republic of Congo has gradually improved since the 2003 peace agreement, many problems persist that constitute serious impediments to enhancing human security and human development. This project seeks to contribute to the consolidation of peace and social stability of the Republic of Congo. The activities will include the following:
-Ensuring personal and community security through completion of the ex-combatants’ re-integration process through sustainable livelihoods in five communities
-Improving delivery of and access to basic social services, such as water and sanitation, health and education in five communities
-Supporting community empowerment processes and promoting a culture of peaceful coexistence between and among the five participating communities - This project is expected to promote human security in the Republic of Congo.
