Statement by Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on Adoption of the Panel Report on “European Communities and its Member States – Tariff Treatment of Certain Information Technology Products” in the WTO Dispute Settlement Proceedings

- Concerning the dispute “European Communities (EC) and its Member States – Tariff Treatment of Certain Information Technology Products,” in which Japan, the United States, and Chinese Taipei jointly filed the complaint, against the EC in the WTO dispute settlement proceedings, on September 21 (Tuesday, Swiss local time), the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body adopted the Panel Report, accepting the claims made by the complainants and making the findings that the EC’s measures at issue are inconsistent with the WTO Agreements, and recommended the EU to bring the relevant measures into conformity with the WTO Agreements. Japan welcomes this adoption and recommendation.
- Following this recommendation, Japan requests the EU in good faith and without delay bring its relevant measures into conformity with its obligations under the WTO Agreements.
