Telephone Conversation between Mr. Naoto Kan, Prime Minister of Japan, and Ms. Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia

Mr. Naoto Kan, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone conversation with Ms. Julia Gillard, recently re-appointed Prime Minister of Australia, for about 10 minutes from 12:10 p.m. on September 8 (Wed).

  1. Prime Minister Kan started the telephone conversation by congratulating Prime Minister Gillard on her re-appointment after her victory in one of the closest elections in Australian history and Prime Minister Gillard expressed her appreciation.

  2. Prime Minister Kan said Japan and –Australia have been enjoying friendly relations for many years and expressed his expectation that he would be able to meet Prime Minister Gillard on the occasion of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Yokohama, though it was regrettable that they couldn’t meet at the G20 Summit in Toronto, last June.  Prime Minister Gillard responded by saying that she is looking forward to visiting Japan for the APEC Meeting and seeing Prime Minister Kan then.  Prime Minister Gillard also stated that Japan and Australia share fundamental values as well as strategic and economic interests, and that Japan is an extremely important partner for Australia.

  3. The two leaders agreed to closely cooperate to further enhance Japan-Australian relations.
