On August 31 (Tue), Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, had a talk with Hon. Dr. Kenneth Baugh, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, who is visiting Japan on MOFA’s invitation, for about 45 minutes from 6:30 p.m., and then exchanged opinions with him from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. over  dinner. The overview is as follows.

  1. Minister Okada welcomed Minister Baugh’s first visit to Japan, and expressed his intention to work with him toward the success of the second Japan-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ministerial-Level Conference to be held on September 2 (Thu), as co-chairs, and to further develop Japan’s cooperative relationship with Jamaica. In response, Minister Baugh thanked Minister Okada for the invitation to visit Japan, and expressed his intention to further promote people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and economic relations between the two countries based on the favorable bilateral relationship.

  2. Concerning economic cooperation, Minister Okada welcomed the overall agreement recently reached between Japan and Jamaica toward the conclusion of an agreement on technical cooperation. In response, Minister Baugh thanked Japan for various kinds of assistance, and noted the importance of Japan’s economic cooperation and requested for its continuation.

  3. The two ministers also exchanged views on various issues pertaining to the international community, including the United Nations Security Council reform, climate change, North Korean issues, and assistance to Haiti.
