Establishment of the High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability and Participation from Japan

- On August 9 (Monday, New York time) United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon announced the establishment of the High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability, as well as the members of the panel. From Japan, Dr. Yukio Hatoyama, former Prime Minister, will participate in this panel. The panel will be co-chaired by Her Excellency Ms. Tarja Halonen, President of Finland, and His Excellency Mr. Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa.
- Japan welcomes Secretary-General Ban’s initiative, and supports the establishment of this new panel, which will formulate a new vision for sustainable growth and prosperity in a low-carbon society. Through active contribution to the panel, Japan will continue to make efforts towards the establishment of a fair and effective international climate change framework in which all major economies participate.
