- In the evening of August 2 (Mon), Mr. Katsuya Okada held talks and hosted a dinner in honor of H.E. Mr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), at the Iikura Guesthouse. After the dinner, the two leaders issued the Joint Communiqué regarding the reinforcement of the cooperative relationship between Japan and the African Union (AU) (see attached document).
- (1) Minister Okada stated that he was glad to welcome Chairperson Ping in Japan and discuss with him on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the “Year of Africa”. He said that Japan will promote actively its assistance to Africa with a view to implementing the official pledges announced at the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), including the doubling of its official development assistance (ODA) to Africa, and that Japan will also make further contribution in the area of peace and security, including resolution of conflicts in Sudan, Somalia, and other places. Furthermore, with regard to its cooperation vis-à-vis the AUC, Minister Okada said that Japan will consider cooperating for the vision of the Pan-African University (PAU) as well as providing technical assistance for AUC’s human capacity building. In response, Chairperson Ping expressed his gratitude for Japan’s assistance to Africa, including the TICAD process.
(2) The two leaders confirmed that they will cooperate closely in tackling global issues including the reform of the UN Security Council. They also discussed the situation in Sudan.
(3) On that basis, the two leaders shared the view that they will further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Japan and the AU, through such means as regular holding of high-level policy talks and the co-organizing of the TICAD with the AUC.
