- On June 28 (NY time), at the 16th meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, election of the members of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was held. From Japan, Ms. Yoko Hayashi, a lawyer and current member of CEDAW, was elected.
- As a lawyer, Ms. Hayashi has been actively engaged in efforts to improve the status of women. Internationally, she served as an alternate member of the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights from 2004 to 2006, and from January 2008, she has been active as a member of CEDAW.
- It is significant for Japan, as a country that places importance on the rights of women, that Ms. Hayashi continues to contribute to the efforts of the Committee, by harnessing her wide expertise and experiences on the rights of women.
