Telephone Conversation between Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mrs. Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State of the United States

Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a telephone conversation with Mrs. Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State of the United States, for about 20 minutes from after 10 p.m. on June 21 (Mon).

  1. Minister Okada started the telephone conversation with a few words concerning his reappointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs and stated that the Japan-U.S. Alliance remains the linchpin of Japan’s diplomacy and that Japan’s policy of further deepening and developing the Japan-U.S. Alliance will be kept unchanged under Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s administration. Secretary of State Clinton congratulated Minister Okada on his reappointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the two ministers agreed to continue close mutual coordination in the future.

  2. Regarding the Futenma Air Station relocation issue, Minister Okada stated that Japan would like to do its best to realize the relocation on the basis of the recent agreement between the two countries and requested continued U.S. cooperation in reducing the burden on Okinawa. Minister Okada and Secretary of State Clinton confirmed that Japan and the United States will make further efforts for the purpose.

  3. Minister Okada and Secretary of State Clinton exchanged views on other issues, such as the sinking of the Republic of Korea (ROK) naval patrol vessel and the Iranian nuclear issue, and agreed to continue close coordination with each other.
