Emergency Assistance in Response to the Torrential Rain Disaster in Western Myanmar

  1. On June 18 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (tents, water tanks, etc.) equivalent to 10 million yen to the Union of Myanmar, which has suffered from damages caused by torrential rain in the western part of the country.

  2. From June 13 (Sun) to June 15 (Tue), torrential rain has caused landslides and floods in Rakhine State, in western Myanmar. There are 46 confirmed dead, more than 6,000 injured or missing, and 500,000 houses destroyed or damaged (as of June 18).
    The current situation in the Rakhine State area is grave with dozens of villages buried under landslides, and bridges and roads washed away in many areas.

  3. At the request of the Government of Myanmar, Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian viewpoint and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
