H.E. Mr. Naoto Kan, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for about 40 minutes from around 6:00 p.m. and hosted dinner for about an hour from 7:00 p.m. on June 17 (Thu). The overview is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister Kan expressed words of welcome to President Karzai on his visit to Japan, and President Karzai responded that this visit coincided with the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Afghanistan and would be an impressive one especially because he was the first guest form overseas since Prime Minister Kan took office.

  2. President Karzai explained Afghanistan’s current efforts to resolve various issues and stated that Japan, especially in the past nine years, had been standing at the forefront of providing assistance to Afghanistan. He also expressed his deep gratitude for Japan’s decision to provide assistance up to an amount in the region of five billion USD in about five years from 2009. Additionally, President Karzai stated his acknowledgement that Japan’s assistance had been provided by the people of Japan, despite the severe fiscal situation, and guaranteed that the assistance would be used in the best possible way for the development and stability of Afghanistan.

  3. Prime Minister Kan expressed his respect for President Karzai’s efforts and stated that the situation in Afghanistan was certainly important to the people of Afghanistan, and that at the same time it was also extremely important for global peace. Prime Minister Kan stated that, Japan has been doing its utmost to provide assistance and that it would continue to do so for the people of Afghanistan and to contribute to global peace. Additionally, Prime Minister Kan stated that as proved by the treasures of Shosoin repository in Nara, which President Karzai would visit during this stay in Japan, the two countries shared a history of more than 1,000 years, and that he would like to continue to build a good relationship for the coming 1,000 to 2,000 years.
