Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the National Consultative Peace Jirga in Afghanistan

- The initiatives proposed by H.E. Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, was supported by a wide range of participants in the National Consultative Peace Jirga held in Kabul, Afghanistan, from June 2 (Wed) to June 4 (Fri). Japan appreciates the Jirga as a certain step forward toward the reconciliation in Afghanistan, in light of the importance of a political resolution in seeking the stability and reconstruction in Afghanistan.
- Japan has been extending assistance to Afghanistan in various areas including political process, security, and development. Japan intends to continue supporting Afghanistan’s own efforts in these areas. Japan will follow with interest Afghanistan’s efforts toward the peace based on the outcomes of this Jirga.
