Statistics for the Number of Visas Issued in 2009

- The total number of visas issued at foreign diplomatic missions (excluding the Embassy of Japan in Haiti*) for the year 2009 was 1,398,756, fell by 7.5% from last year. This is due to the 2008 recession, the pandemic influenza, and the strong Japanese yen against many foreign currencies, which affected the decrease of the number of foreign visitors to Japan.
- The number of visas issued by nationality and region is as follows (in descending order): China (754,817), Thailand (157,062), Malaysia (76,933), the Philippines (62,174), Indonesia (54,578), India (39,330), Russia (38,672), ROK (23,525), Vietnam (22,066), the United States (19,363). The number of visas issued in these top ten countries accounts for approximately 90% of the total number of visas issued.
- The number of visas issued by foreign diplomatic missions is as follows (in descending order): Consulate-General of Japan in Shanghai (273,558), Embassy of Japan in China (244,153), Embassy of Japan in Thailand (152,625), Consulate-General of Japan in Guangzhou (109,324), Consulate-General of Japan in Manila (55,869), Consulate-General of Japan in Shenyang (54,290), Embassy of Japan in Malaysia (48,508), Consulate-General of Japan in Jakarta (39,424), Consular Office of Japan in Dalian (35,432), Consulate-General of Japan at Chongqing (28,599). The number of visas issued by these diplomatic facilities accounts for approximately 75% of the total number of visas issued.
- The number of visas issued for tourists from China was 386,602, an increase of 10.2% from last year and the largest number in history. 7,688 individual tourists are included in the statistics.
* The number of visas issued by the Embassy of Japan in Haiti was unable to be counted due to the effects of the large-scale earthquake that struck the country in January 2010.
