- Mr. Anthony Lake, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) paid a courtesy call on Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on May 12 (Wed) for about thirty minutes starting at 2 p.m. at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Minister Okada expressed his congratulations for Executive Director Lake assuming his post. He also stated that UNICEF and Japan have had a long cooperative relationship for over sixty years, and that he hopes to continue strengthening collaboration with UNICEF in the fields of maternal and child health, education and water and sanitation through the TICAD process towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
- In response, Executive Director Lake shared his deep thanks for the support of the Government and people of Japan towards UNICEF. He expressed his high evaluation of the leadership of Japan, which has made great efforts towards the promotion of human security and initiatives regarding global issues. He also stated that he hopes to further deepen cooperation between Japan and UNICEF towards strengthening aid for the children of the world living in most vulnerable situations.
- In addition, an exchange of views was held regarding topics such as Japan’s aid to Haiti through UNICEF.
