Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Hon. Mizengo Peter Pinda, Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, who was paying a working visit to Japan, on March 26 (Fri) for approximately thirty minutes from 4:30 p.m.

  1. Opening Remarks

    (1) Minister Okada welcomed Prime Minister Pinda's visit to Japan, and expected that this visit would lead to the development of bilateral relations as well as strengthening of mutual cooperation in the international arena. He also expressed his respect for the leadership that Prime Minister Pinda is displaying regarding the national development centered around agriculture of Tanzania. Minister Okada also stated that Japan intends to support Tanzania's future efforts.

    (2) In response, Prime Minister Pinda expressed his gratitude for his invitation to visit Japan, as well as for Japan's assistance to Tanzania. He also stated that he would like to cooperate in the future for further strengthening the relations between Japan and Tanzania. He explained agricultural initiatives promoted in Tanzania, and said that one of his goals for visiting Japan this time was to learn from Japan's experience in Japanese agriculture, especially regarding the irrigation facilities scheme and the human resources development. Prime Minister Pinda also shared his hope for further cooperation from Japan.

  2. TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting

    Minister Okada requested the cooperation of the Government of Tanzania towards the success of the TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Arusha, Tanzania in May. In response, Prime Minister Pinda expressed his respect for Japan's contributions in the TICAD process, and said that the Government of Tanzania would happily cooperate towards the success of the TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting.

  3. In addition, Minister Okada and Prime Minister Pinda exchanged views regarding issues such as climate change.

(Reference) TICAD IV Follow-up

(1) The Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) was held in Yokohama in May 2008. At the TICAD IV the "Yokohama Action Plan" was announced including such measures as Japan's doubling its ODA to Africa by 2012, supporting the doubling of private investment towards Africa and many others. A follow-up mechanism to monitor its implementation was also established.

(2) This mechanism includes the TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meetings held in principle once a year in Africa, where ministers discuss the implementation of the "Yokohama Action Plan." The 2009 TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting was held in March in Botswana. The 2010 TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting will be held from Mary 2 to 3 in Arusha, Tanzania.
