On March 11 (Thu), Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Mr. H.E. Mr. Grigol Vashadze, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, for approximately forty-five minutes starting at 5:15 pm. An overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Minister Okada opened by saying that he welcomed Minister Vachadze’s visit to Japan and that he highly evaluated the recent and steady development of Japan-Georgia relations. Minister Vachadze responded by expressing his gratitude for the political and economic support provided by the Government of Japan to Georgia since Georgia’s independence. Both ministers agreed that the political consultations held regularly between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries were extremely beneficial, and that they would like to continue such dialogues in the future, as well.

  2. Minister Vachadze explained the recent developments in the Caucasus region and surrounding countries. He also expressed his gratitude for the political and economic support provided by Japan since the conflict concerning South Ossetia in August 2008. Minister Okada expressed its expectation for the peaceful resolution of the issues in the region that would be acceptable to the international community, and the intention of Japan’s continuous support toward Georgia.

  3. Both ministers also agreed to continue cooperative efforts with respect to international issues including the environmental issues such as climate change and UN Security Council reform.
